Simple DIY All Natural Lavender Linen Spray

Do you want an all natural way to make your laundry smell amazing ? Here’s a simple DIY All Natural Lavender Spray that will make your towels, clothes, linens and your entire house smell fresh and clean!

When I did away with all the toxic cleaners from my home a few years back, I missed those fragrances I used to associate with being “clean”.

Although I felt safer using toxin free, fragrance free products like Branch Basics,  I just couldn’t get used to my laundry smelling like… well….nothing…

This was the case, until I found a natural way to restore these fragrances easily and simply without causing me or my family harm.

Now that I have this DIY All Natural Lavender Linen Spray, I’ll never go back to using artificially scented dryer sheets again because my laundry now smells clean and fresh without all the mess.

Why Scented Dryer Sheets Are Bad For Your Health

In 2011, a team of environmental safety engineers headed by Dr. Anne Steinemann, studied what sorts of “chemical emissions” came from residential laundry vents from the “use of fragranced laundry products”.

Here’s what they found:

  • More than 25 Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) emitted from dryer vents
  • Seven of these VOCs are considered “hazardous air pollutants” (HAPs)
  • Two carcinogenic compounds, acetaldehyde and benzene, which are not considered safe at “any exposure level” by the US Environmental Protection Agency

Other reputable sources  found traces of acetyl hesamethy tetralin -a synthetic compound that gives fragrances that musky scent in typical dryer sheets.

This was what they concluded concerning fragranced laundry products:

Harmful, dangerous for the environment” not to mention “very toxic to aquatic organisms”.

They also warned that these products should be kept “out of reach of children”.

What Those Dryer Vents Are Telling You

Despite these findings, I still ignored the warnings because my nose (i.e. my senses) had become so desensitized to these smells.

It was only AFTER I’d weaned myself off did I realize how strong and toxic these odors are.

Now, whenever I walk by a neighbor’s house and catch a whiff of their scented laundry coming from their dryer vents, I instantly recoil at the smell.

I can hardly breathe let alone get my dog to walk anywhere near homes that have dryer vents giving off these synthetic fragrances.

But tossing out the toxins didn’t mean I had to give up my fragrances altogether.

With this simple recipe for my DIY linen spray, I can still have my laundry and my whole house smelling great without compromising my well being.

Ways to Use Your DIY All Natural Linen Spray

The great thing about this spray is that you can replace virtually every toxic fragrance out of your home (scented candles, reed diffusers, room deodorizers etc.), and use this safer alternative instead.

Here are some of the ways I enjoy this DIY Lavender Linen Spray in my own home:

  1. Room deodorizer-I just spritz this DIY linen spray into the air before guests arrive to make my whole house smell heavenly!
  2. Carpet freshener-I use this spray instead of baking soda to deodorize my carpets since baking soda can remain trapped inside the rug fibers and cause allergies. A few drops of this Purification blend, zaps out odors as well.
  3. Upholstery/fabric freshner -I use this all natural lavender spray to freshen up all my upholstered furniture, my drapes, and even my cushion covers in between washes.
  4. Car deodorizer– I keep a small 2 oz bottle of this spray in the car to freshen the air a bit when it starts to smell musty or stale. A couple of drops of either Thieves oil or peppermint oil really perks me up when I’m stuck in traffic.
  5. Scented sachets-I spray some on my drawer sachets to keep my closet smelling like a field of lavenders.
  6. Bug repellent – You can find the recipe for this DIY Nautural bug repellent that works just as well as other popular brands

Use only organic, therapeutic-grade essential oils

Just a word of caution here though—be sure that you’re using only the highest quality organic, therapeutic-grade (or aromatherapy grade) essential oils to make your sprays.

The cheaper oils usually contain synthetic fillers and other derivatives that can aggravate more allergies and therefore cause just as much harm as those synthetic fragrances.

To test the purity of the oil you’re using, just conduct this simple blot paper test at home.

  1. Take a piece of clean paper and write down the name of the essential oil and draw a circle on top.
  2. Then using a glass dropper, or just directly from the bottle, put one drop of essential oil within the the circle you drew.
  3. Wait 2 hours or until it dries completely.
  4. Check to see if there’s a greasy ring or an oil stain within the circle. If so, the oil has been adulterated with something else. If not, the oil is pure grade.

Here’s a look at the sample test I did between the Now brand lemon essential oil and the pure grade lemon essential oil from the Young Essential Oils I use.

As I always say, you really get what you pay for.

Concerns and Questions

In case you’re still on the fence about using essential oils to scent your home, here are some answers to questions I get all the time from my friends and neighbors about using essential oils.

Q: Won’t the essential oils cause allergies?

Yes and no. Because essential oils are basically distillations from the flowers and plants, if you’re allergic to that particular plant/flower you’ll be sensitive to that essential oil.

For instance, I have no allergies to lavender, but I avoid all citrus oils because I know I have an allergy to orange blossoms.

This is why it’s best to do a patch test on any oil, before you do anything with it like diffuse it, use them as fragrances etc.

Q: Aren’t essential oils expensive?

Yes, the oils can get pretty expensive and yet I’ve found so many uses for my oils (i.e. lavender oil to soothe burns, or to diffuse it at night for a calming scent to lull me to sleep, or in my face lotion to brighten my complexion!) it more than pays for itself.

Q: Aren’t non-toxic laundry dryer sheet Just as Safe?

Studies show that even those so called “green” and “clean” dryer sheets leave traces of harmful toxins on fabric.

I’ve also found that after switching over to Young Living essential oils, I’ve been able to replace many of the other products I’d been using in the past.

Now I roll on some  Panaway to relieve my neck pain, Digize to alleviate stomach upset, and mix a bit of Frankincense into my night cream to brighten my skin.

I’ve also found that my family also has less skin and respiratory problems as a result of going toxin free and more importantly, artificial fragrance free, and are much healthier overall.

These health benefits, in my opinion, far outweigh the “hassles” of making my own DIY fragrances.

Simple Test To See If Fragrances Are Harming You

If you’re still not convinced that synthetic fragrances can be harmful, take this 4 simple question test to see for yourself whether or not these chemical fragrances are affecting you.

This is not a valid scientific test by any means, but a good way to gauge what you may be missing out on. Remember the first step to any health issue is to locate the source and not just cover up the problems.

Ask Yourself These 4 Questions

  1. Do you or your children have recurrent respiratory issues (sneezing, coughing, or post nasal drip)?
  2. Does anyone in your family suffer from eczema or some other skin conditions like rosacea, dry skin, acne, or molluscum?
  3. Do you have recurrent headaches or brain fog or suffer from chronic fatigue?
  4. Do you or any of your children mouth breathe?

If you answered “yes” to even one of these questions, I’m willing to bet that household fragrances, even though they’re not causing them, are definitely aggravating them.

Studies find evidence again and again that fragrances cause:

  • Respiratory problems (allergies, asthma)
  • Sleep issues
  • Chronic fatigue
  • eczema and other skin issues
  • and cancer

Even worse, this same study shows that these allergies/sensitivities double for those who already have asthma, allergies, or autism.
